Piggy-Bank

Portrait of the cartoonist as a young lad preparing to go on a candy-and- comic-book buying spree. To his dismay he discovers the piggy-bank is filled with nothing but washers, the money having been pilfered by a dipsomaniac auntie who has spent it all on gin and cigarettes. This betrayal leaves the lad with a dyspeptic view of life making him ripe for a descent into the sordid world of cartooning. His final ruin is assured when, at the age of twelve, another auntie gives him a Walter T. Foster "How to Draw" book containing a number of pages on "How to Draw Cartoons." Thus is an innocent drawn to the dark side where to this day he still wears the fool's cap-and-bells of the "professional cartoonist."
